Darnell Stanley, 45, is being remembered for his selflessness following his shooting death on Friday evening, Nov. 24, on the 600 block of Audrey Lane in Oxon Hill.
The Temple Hills resident was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following his death, his family and community have been rallying to raise money for the man who spent his years helping his fellow veterans "get the medical treatment they needed to live full, happy, and productive lives after their time in service."
"I served alongside Darrell, and I’ve had the pleasure and honor of watching this man continue to selflessly serve his fellow veterans, community, and family for over twenty years since then," organizers of a GoFundMe campaign wrote.
Tributes poured in for the man they called "Squirrel" in the days after he was identified by the police as the person killed over the holiday weekend.
"For those of you who don’t know, he also leaves behind a family, which includes two young children, and they need our support right now," Jeremy Knuaff posted on Facebook.
"We created a (GoFundMe) to help raise money for them," he continued. "Guys, we should be able to hit $100K for Darnell’s family pretty easily, especially when you consider we have 200+ Marines who served directly with him in 3/2 Lima."
Police continue probing Stanley's death as of Monday afternoon and are still working to identify a suspect and possible motive in the veteran's death.
Those interested in donating to the former Marine's family can do so here.
"His family has been blindsided by this senseless act of violence, leaving them without a husband and father, as well as placing a tremendous financial burden on them, so the least we can do is rally the troops to support them, like Darnell had done for so many others throughout his life," the GoFundMe organizer posted.
